‘The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value…as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy’
These words from the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, show the importance of music and singing to the liturgy. Music has the ability to raise the soul, heart and mind to heaven, and a common saying is that when you sing you pray twice. The Parish Choir aim to bring all these beautiful ideas together, singing for 11am Mass every Sunday, as well as for Christmas, Easter, Weddings and other special events throughout the year. We are accompanied by the Organ, played by our wonderful organist Gerry Poole. The repertoire for the choir tends to be of a more classic nature, often singing two- or three-part music, ranging from music in Latin, music by Sibelius and Faure, to John Rutter and Mike Stanley.
We practice weekly at 7:30pm on a Tuesday evening in the Choir area of Church and all are welcome to attend. The choir is a friendly group, welcoming new members with a love of singing. No previous musical experience is necessary, just some joy in singing and dedication to music-making.
At Christmas, for the Carol Service we join together with the 9am and 6pm choirs to create a musical extravaganza for the congregation to enjoy and participate in. All choirs also support the parish in concerts and fundraising activities where possible.
Choir Prayer:
Dear Lord, we thank you for the gift of music. Please grant that with your grace and our efforts in friendship, we may aim to high standards in giving praise and glory to God. Amen
