Steve Roper: H&S Liaison Officer
The Parish H&S committee (a subgroup of the Parish Finance Committee) chaired by the Parish Priest with members of the parish meets monthly. One member is appointed as the Health & Safety Liaison Officer. We implement the Archdiocese Health and Safety 2019 Policy requirements and advise on H&S issues affecting the Parish. We will act upon any subsequent policy changes e.g., COVID instructions. The Archdiocese and the Parish’s objective is to manage workplace H&S to eliminate risks where reasonably practical. We aim to ensure that all legislation within the H&S at Work Act, Fire Safety Regulations, Legionella Code of Practise are followed.
The Parish Priest is responsible for implementation of the policy and completion of documentation as required by the Archdiocese trustees using the XCENTA system. General risk assessments are carried out and significant findings are recorded and necessary actions are taken. All members complete distant learning relating to various subjects including: Asbestos management; Accident reporting; Parish risk review; Office safety; Working at height; Car park safety; Electrical safety; Gas safety. Occupancy rules, Hygiene regulations, Legionella risks and First Aid are all addressed.
A member of the committee commented:
“It may seem over the top, but whilst Covid focused our minds on the virus, with putting in measures to reduce risk of contamination, Grenfell tower and other major incidents e.g. terrorist acts, have meant we need to take all risks seriously including Security. We have an obligation to look after the welfare of all staff, volunteers, priests and brothers, visitors and parishioners who are on the premises.”
